Leirvassbu is the perfect starting point for hiking in Jotunheimen.
Leirvassbu is a mountain lodge in Jotunheimen, situated by the lake Leirvatnet, just below the characteristic mountain Kyrkja. Leirvassbu, 1400 meters above sea level, is the perfect base camp for mountain rambling, summit hikes, glacier walks and courses, spring skiing, climbing and fishing.
Four valleys meet at Leirvassbu, where sharp crags and peaks are reaching up towards the sky. On day trips you can reach about 50 peaks above 2000 meters above sea level.
Many of these require actual mountain climbing skills in order to reach the top, but most can be reached using ordinary hiking boots for those who are comfortable with doing some easy scrambling. A large variety of summit hikes and climbs are available in Jotunheimen, both technically challenging as well as easier hikes suitable for the entire family.
The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) have listed and marked routes going from Leirvassbu to all the mountain lodges in the area. In the winter season there is also marked tracks to all the surrounding lodges.
