Famous scenes in the film Troll were filmed in Jotunheimen. Did you know that the troll itself came to life at a mountain face at Sognefjellet in Lom municipality?
The Norwegian film "Troll" was launched on Netflix in December 2022 and is the most watched non-English speaking film on Netflix ever. Many of the scenes in the film were shot in Bøverdalen in Lom municipality. The iconic scene where the Troll awakes was shot in Breiseterdalen, close to Krossbu lodge along the scenic route Sognefjellsvegen (Road 55). The house that is destroyed by the troll was set up in Flåklypa in Bøverdalen in Lom, and the small cabin in the film is located on Valdresflye (along Road 51).
- In these scenes, the surroundings are not just a backdrop, but play their own role in the film. Director Roar Uthaug told me that the mountains in Jotunheimen inspired him in the choice of both colors and texture, when he developed the "look" of the troll in the movie, says film commissioner Hanne Larsen in the Eastern Norway Film Commission.
In the film, a troll is brought to life on Dovrefjell and starts its long journey down the entire Gudbrandsdalen towards the capital Oslo. A total of 223 million Netflix subscribers have the opportunity to watch the spectacular Norwegian nature along the troll's journey to the south of the country.
Mountains Will Move
The tagline “Mountains Will Move” identifies the iconic scenes when the mountain awakes and the troll reveals itself, shot in Jotunheimen, in the municipality of Lom. The incredible Jotunheimen mountain range is not only used as a backdrop in the film Troll, but the location is “becoming alive” and plays an active part in the story.
Director Roar Uthaug says that the natural beauty of Jotunheimen also inspired him in the selection of surfaces and colours he implemented in creating the Troll in the film. The film’s spectacular and inventive use of Norwegian nature led to a nomination for the prestigious LMGI Awards, in the category “Outstanding Locations in a Contemporary Feature Film”. Elveseter Hotell, where visitors can trace the footsteps of the Troll, has been a favoured venue of kings, heads of state and adventurers for over 150 years. The hotel is currently run by the sixth generation of the Elveseter family. Magnificent nature, a unique art collection and exquisite cuisine provide a rich experience.
Jotunheimen National Park is home to 29 of the highest mountain peaks in Norway, including Galdhøpiggen (2469 masl), Northern Europe’s highest mountain. In addition to spectacular mountain tours, visitors can enjoy a wealth of memorable experiences such as glacier hiking, cave hiking, fishing, horse riding, Galdhøpiggen summer ski centre, the climbing park, cycling, rafting in Sjoa or a visit to Lom National Park Village.
The crew was very welcomed in Lom
The film is produced for Netflix by Motion Blur, with producers Espen Horn and Kristian Sinkerud. The director is Roar Uthaug.
Director Roar Uthaug and producer Espen Horn both praised the local population and nature in Gudbrandsdalen at the time of the launch of the movie in Desember 2022.
- We came to great nature, high peaks and deep valleys, and we where welcomed by great people. There are many people from here who have helped us, so it is nice for us to come here to give something back, said the two.
They say that the entire film team was well welcomed in Lom.
- We got the impression that the entire local community welcomed us, says Uthaug.
At most, the film crew of 250 people was in Bøverdalen and Lom during the recording. At Hunderfossen family park there were almost 500 extras for one of the most intense scenes in the film.
